Therawands, Toilet Seat Covers and Laxido

Updated: May 21, 2022

Coping with prolapse has enabled me to come across products that I would haver never have even known existed. If you have just newly discovered you have prolapse then fear not, there are many products and people out there willing to help you. Believe me when I say you are not alone in this journey. Firstly, lets start with my discovery of the Therawand. Initially, when I found out that I had extremely tense and tight pelvic floor muscles it was recommended by my physiotherapist that I purchase a Therawand which would be useful for relaxing and relieving trigger points within the vagina. Now to me, when I first started researching this odd piece of equipment it looked a little bit like a worm and the thought of putting that up my vagina was quite daunting. However, when the Therawand finally did arrive in the post, I tried it out and was pleasantly surprised. It was very effective at relieving tight and sore points in the the pelvic floor musculature. Overtime as I used it I noticed that it became less and less painful when doing an internal massage. If you are nervous about using a Therawand then there are many useful YouTube videos on how to use it and what angle is best. However, I am not saying go out right away and buy a Therawand, but for me personally, it was something that really helped release tension in my pelvic floor muscles.

Right, next on the list is toilet seat covers. Usually when I go to a public toilet I squat above the toilet as I think I'm going to contract all the nasty germs on that seat and so I attempt to hover instead while I am peeing. All I can say is STOP THAT NOW. When I went to a specialist gynaecologist in London Bridge Hospital I was told to drain my bladder before going to the appointment and so I did. I went into the toilet and did my little squatting routine. Afterwards, the gynaecologist proceeded to do an ultrasound of my stomach whereby she observed that my bladder was still half full. She then went on to ask me whether or not I squatted on the toilet seat. It turns out that squatting when you go to the toilet can actually strain the pelvic floor muscles and actually damage the pelvic floor. More importantly, when you squat you are engaging the muscles in your pelvis which prevents your bladder from fully emptying. In the long run this can cause UTI's as the urine that has not drained and will just sit there until the next time you urinate. So if you are squatting when you pee you need to stop ASAP as you may cause yourself further problems in the long run. What you can do is purchase some disposable toilet seat covers that you use whenever you go to a public toilet so that you properly sit down on the toilet and properly drain your bladder.

Last but not least is Laxido. Laxido is used for the treatment of chronic constipation. Constipation results in straining which puts downward pressure on the pelvic floor. Therefore, it was recommended that I take Laxido to make sure my bowel movements are not resulting in me having to strain everyday on the toilet. Even if you are not chronically constipated you can still use Laxido just as I do. Basically, I use half a sachet a day in which I pour into my water before bed. You can get different flavours of Laxido but I just use the basic orange sachet. If you don't want to use medication then of course you can just increase your intake of fibre or food that relieve constipation such as prunes, apples and lentils.
